of Australia held, for the first time, that the common law of
Australia recognised the prior land rights of Australian Aboriginal
people. The decision (Mabo v Queensland (1992) overturned the
judgment of Mr Justice Blackburn who had held, 21 years earlier,
that Aboriginal title to land had not survived British settlement of
the continent
