- Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Commission
- The goal of the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission is to secure
the empowerment of our people so that, through
self-determination, we can make decisions that affect our lives
and share in Australia's land, wealth and resources,
contributing equitably to the nation's economic, social and
political life, with full recognition of our indigenous cultural
heritage as the First Australians.
- Council
For Aboriginal Reconciliation
- The Council for Aboriginal
Reconciliation has adopted a vision statement which guides all of
its endeavours:
- A united Australia
which respects this land of ours; values the Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander heritage; and provides justice and equity
for all.
- Reconciliation
and Social Justice Library
- The Reconciliation and
Social Justice Library includes an array of both Government and
Non-Government publications. Major items include:
- The Royal Commission
into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody
- Council for Aboriginal
Reconciliation Publications
- The Review of the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act
- The Community Guide to
the National Inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander children from their families
- National
Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Children from Their Families
- The Inquiry conducted
hearings in all capital cities and in many regional and smaller
centres. It took public evidence as well as evidence in private from
Indigenous people affected by forcible removal and from adoptive and
foster parents. Evidence or submissions were taken from 777 people,
535 of these were Indigenous people concerning their experiences of
removal policies.
- National
Native Title Tribunal
- The Tribunal is a
Commonwealth Government body established under the Native Title Act
1993 to facilitate the making of agreements among Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people, governments, industry and others
whose rights or interests may co-exist with native title rights and
interests. The Tribunal is not a court and does not decide whether
or not native title exists.
- National
Libraries and First Nations
- In the last few years
librarians and archivists in Australia have questioned the relevance
of their institutions for Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait
Islanders. Issues debated have included the desirability of either
strengthening or dispersing indigenous collections, the need to
enhance access to collections through special bibliographies and
indexes, the provision of information services to indigenous
communities, the racist or offensive nature of some subject headings
used in catalogues, access to secret and sacred materials,
recruitment and training of Aboriginal staff, and representation of
Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders on library councils and
boards.
